During water treatment, the MELAdem 53 ion exchange system takes positively charged or negatively charged ions from the raw water and exchanges them for ions of the same charge. Through ion exchange, practices and clinics achieve the desired water quality for the reprocessing of medical products. However, this gradually exhausts the synthetic resin present in the ion exchanger cartridge. Since our autoclaves and thermodisinfectors have an integrated conductivity measurement, the decreasing water quality sooner or later leads to a warning or malfunction message.
The subsequent professional regeneration is an environmentally conscious and resource-saving procedure. This is because after the mixed bed resin has been replaced, not only can the MELAdem 53 container be completely reused, but also used resin is reprocessed for future regenerations.
The capacity, i.e. how much demineralized water can be treated with the resin, depends particularly on the ion concentration in the input water and thus on the water quality. If the water has a high ion concentration or conductivity, more ions must be exchanged, which results in a shorter operating time of the MELAdem 53. With regard to conductivity and water hardness, the containers of the MELAdem 53 have a capacity of:
2800 liters at at 10 °dH
1200 liters at 20 °dH
800 liters at 25 °dH
When stored in a cool and dry place, the mixed bed resin cartridge can be used for up to 18 months (see marking disc). The optimum temperature range for storage is 2 - 20 °C. A mixed bed resin cartridge filled with water must always be protected from frost.
Some practices and clinics have a central water softening system for the water supply. A softening system removes the hardness-forming ions from the drinking water and exchanges them in equal part with sodium ions. The increased sodium content in the water can lead to a one-sided load on the ion exchanger system and thus to premature exhaustion of the MELAdem 53. Therefore, if your central softening system is connected to the water supply in the treatment room, please ensure the correct functioning of this system together with the manufacturer - for example, after regenerating the central softening system with sodium / salt, the first intermediate rinse should be fed directly into the wastewater. Please note that an upstream softening plant has no positive effect on the capacity of the MELAdem 53.
