Reprocessing of FFP masks:

Due to the supply shortages of FFP2 and FFP3 masks during the Covid-19 crisis, authorities are working on methods to reprocess the protective masks. A stipulated and documented decontamination instruction for disposable protective masks is essential for personnel and patient protection. Please contact your local authority and the mask manufacturer for recommended decontamination procedures.

In the following section we provide you brief summary of the specifications published to date:

  • In the publication on 15.04.2020, the German Society for Sterile Supply (DGSV) unfortunately declared its previously recommended procedure for reprocessing FFP masks in the Gentle-Program at 121 °C, published on 01.04.2020, to be obsolete. Please note the further information on the decontamination of protective masks from the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) in Germany:
  • The Austrian Society for Sterile Services (ÖGSV), however, refers to the publication of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Labour, Family and Youth. In Austria, the steam sterilization of FFP masks is permitted at 121°C by using the Gentle Program. Please consider the additional measures to create a suitable decontamination process for protective masks in the clinical sector:

If further statements by other countries are published, we will extend our list.
